What the heck is a WebSocket?

I kept running into WebSockets while building things. So I went down another rabbit hole to figure out why we'd need one in the first place.
Normal HTTP is a question and an answer. The browser asks, the server replies, and the conversation ends.
A WebSocket keeps the connection open, so either side can send a message whenever it wants.
